Motor Runs Slowly but Gets Hot? Lower Speed Can Mean Less Cooling

Lower shaft speed does not guarantee lower motor temperature. A shaft-driven fan may provide less cooling while the load still requires substantial torque. Check the motor-drive operating envelope before assuming a slow process is thermally easy.

What is happening?

Self-cooling, motor construction, drive operation, torque demand, and ambient conditions determine temperature. Some applications require a suitably rated motor or independent cooling. Those are engineering selection questions, not settings to improvise during a fault.

Check these five things

  1. Record motor identity, drive configuration, load, and speed range.

  2. Check the approved torque-speed and thermal-duty information.

  3. Inspect cooling paths and any separately powered fan.

  4. Compare temperature and load over enough time to reveal accumulation.

  5. Have the responsible engineer validate the motor-drive combination.

Worked example

A conveyor model runs at low speed with near-constant torque demand. Its shaft fan also slows, reducing cooling. A short unloaded test looks acceptable, while a long loaded run exposes heating. The difference is duty and cooling, not simply commanded frequency.

The mistake to avoid

Disabling thermal protection or inflating motor ratings can remove the warning without making the operating condition acceptable. Preserve protection and correct the cause.

Validate the approved duty over representative duration and ambient conditions using suitable measurements. Retain motor, drive, cooling, and protection settings in the equipment record.
