The Fault Is Gone After a Reboot—Did You Fix Anything or Erase the Evidence?

A restart can restore service while leaving the cause unresolved. It can also clear transient diagnostics, counters, or the sequence state needed to understand the event. Capture the available evidence first whenever the approved recovery procedure and operating conditions permit it.

What is happening?

Different controllers and devices retain different diagnostic information across restart. A disappearing symptom can result from reinitialization, re-established communication, or a cleared resource condition. None of those observations alone proves that the underlying defect has been removed.

Check these five things

  1. Follow the site's immediate response procedure and establish the permitted recovery actions.

  2. Record fault codes, timestamps, operating state, relevant values, and recent changes before reset where feasible.

  3. Export supported diagnostic logs and traces without delaying any required protective response.

  4. Document exactly what was restarted and what changed afterward.

  5. Plan a targeted follow-up test or capture based on the evidence rather than repeating reboots indefinitely.

Worked example

A communication device recovers after power cycling, but its error counters and connection history are lost. Production resumes, yet the next investigation has less evidence. A prepared diagnostic capture procedure makes future events more useful without changing the authorized recovery response.
