Vacuum Gripper Works on One Box but Drops Another? Test the Surface

Vacuum gripping depends on the workpiece surface as well as the vacuum source. A smooth test plate can pass while porous cardboard or a dusty production part leaks. Validate the actual product and movement rather than only the empty circuit.

Workpiece handling must remain within the validated machine design.

What is happening?

Seal quality, effective area, leakage flow, surface condition, and dynamic loads influence holding. A pressure switch at one location may not fully describe conditions at every cup. Gripper selection needs the documented workpiece and motion assumptions.

Check these five things

  1. Compare failed and successful surfaces, coatings, and geometry.

  2. Inspect cups and distribution paths under approved access procedures.

  3. Record vacuum build-up and loss at relevant measurement points.

  4. Review source flow capability and monitoring with the gripper specification.

  5. Validate handling with representative worst-case products and approved safeguards.

Worked example

A teaching gripper reaches its threshold on a sealed plastic sheet but struggles on porous board. The source must handle continuing leakage, not merely evacuate a closed volume. A longer timer may hide the symptom without establishing adequate holding throughout motion.

The mistake to avoid

Lowering the vacuum acceptance threshold to avoid a timeout can approve an inadequate grip. Changes require a validated handling design and containment of dropped-load hazards.

How to verify the fix

Confirm pickup, transfer, and release under the qualified surface and motion conditions. Document rejected product conditions and the response to loss of vacuum.
