Ultrasonic Sensor Loses the Closest Target? Check the Blind Zone

Moving a target closer does not always improve ultrasonic detection. A sensor has a specified minimum operating distance. If detection disappears near the face, compare the actual geometry with the blind zone before increasing sensitivity.

What is happening?
An ultrasonic sensor needs time to transmit, receive, and evaluate an echo. Very close objects can fall outside the usable range. Target angle, size, material, and environmental conditions also affect the returned signal.
Check these five things

Read minimum distance and target conditions for the exact model.

Measure closest and farthest positions in the complete motion path.

Check angle and whether the echo reflects back toward the sensor.

Compare representative target surfaces rather than a convenient test plate.

Validate the selected mounting arrangement over expected environmental conditions.
Worked example
A sensor specified for a hypothetical minimum distance of 100 mm is installed where the part approaches to 60 mm. It detects the part farther away but loses it near the stop. That behavior can be consistent with its range specification rather than an intermittent cable.

The mistake to avoid
A successful hand test does not qualify the production geometry. A hand and a narrow angled component can provide very different echoes.
How to verify the fix
Test the nearest, farthest, and least reflective intended positions, including startup and environmental limits specified by the manufacturer. Record detection margins, not just one successful point.
