A reading moving in the wrong direction during a controlled temperature change suggests a polarity or configuration problem. Inspect the complete thermocouple circuit before applying an inverted scale in the PLC.

What is happening?
Thermocouple polarity follows its conductor materials and connector conventions. Extension wiring and connectors must suit the thermocouple type. Color codes vary by standard, so color alone is insufficient identification.
Check these five things

Confirm the probe type and input-channel configuration.

Identify the applicable wire-color and connector standard.

Trace polarity through each approved junction and extension.

Use an appropriate controlled reference test outside production.

Restore the documented wiring arrangement and verify the entire range.
Worked example
A model probe warms while the display falls below its starting value. An extension connection reverses the thermoelectric polarity. Negating the PLC number appears to correct direction but leaves reference-junction and calibration behavior wrong. The circuit must be identified and repaired correctly.

The mistake to avoid
Swapping wires blindly is not a diagnostic plan. Incorrect thermocouple type, compensation, and multiple wiring errors can produce confusing results even after one reversal.
How to verify the fix
Compare both direction and absolute reading with a suitable reference at several conditions. Document conductor standard, extension type, and terminal identification for future replacements.
