Servo Speed Stops Increasing? Find the Active Limit First

A larger speed command may not produce more actual speed when another limit is active. Compare the requested move, internal command, feedback, and limit status. This separates command restriction from inability to follow the command.

Axis attributes and limit behavior are drive- and controller-specific.

What is happening?

Velocity, acceleration, torque, current, and application overrides can constrain motion at different stages. Motor capability also varies with operating conditions. A limit can be functioning as intended rather than representing a fault to remove.

Check these five things

  1. Record requested velocity, planner command, actual velocity, and active status.

  2. Inspect application overrides and configured directional limits.

  3. Compare torque or current demand with documented capability.

  4. Check payload and mechanical resistance through approved inspection.

  5. Review any proposed change against the complete machine design.

Worked example

In one teaching trace, requested speed rises but the planner command remains capped, suggesting an upstream restriction. In another, command rises while feedback lags and demand reaches a limit. These traces call for different investigations even if the HMI symptom looks identical.

The mistake to avoid

Do not raise limits simply to reach a desired production speed. They may protect motor, drive, transmission, tooling, or product handling requirements.

How to verify the fix

Demonstrate the required profile within approved limits at representative load and temperature. Record the limiting stage and rationale so future changes do not undo the validated constraint.
