Two Trends Look Identical but Values Differ? Check the Axes

Chart shape alone does not establish equal values or a causal relationship. Independently scaled axes can make unrelated magnitudes look identical. Read units, ranges, and timestamps before using a trend screenshot to justify a control change.

What is happening?

Automatic axis limits can emphasize small variation or hide large absolute differences. Multiple axes, normalized series, and different aggregation intervals add ambiguity. A useful diagnostic chart states which transformations produced the visible lines.

Check these five things

  1. Read every axis label, unit, and numerical range.

  2. Check whether series share an axis or use separate scaling.

  3. Align timestamps and aggregation intervals.

  4. Compare raw values at selected points.

  5. Use a fixed, documented presentation for before-and-after evidence.

Worked example

A teaching chart auto-scales one signal from 0 to 100 and another from 49 to 51. Both lines fill the plot height, making their variation look similar. Their actual ranges are very different, and the chart alone does not show which variation matters to the process.

The mistake to avoid

Changing scales until a relationship looks convincing is not evidence. State the question first, then choose a presentation that preserves the quantities relevant to it.

How to verify the fix

Attach units, axis limits, sample interval, and selected raw values to diagnostic screenshots. Confirm the conclusion still holds when the underlying numbers are compared.
