RS485 extra device termination bias loading - PLC Playground troubleshooting guide

RS-485 Fails When One More Device Is Added? Check the Electrical Bus

Adding one RS-485 device changes more than the address list. It can add loading, termination, biasing, a long stub, or another reference path. Inspect the physical bus design when a previously stable serial network fails after expansion.

RS-485 installation must follow the exact equipment and serial-line guidance.

What is happening?

Termination and polarization serve different purposes. Their implementation depends on transceivers and the network design. Multiple devices may contain selectable internal components, so visible external resistors do not tell the whole story.

Check these five things

  1. Draw the actual trunk, endpoints, branches, and added device.

  2. Check built-in termination and bias settings against both manuals.

  3. Review permitted loading, cable, stub length, and reference arrangements.

  4. Inspect wiring only with the required isolation and test procedures.

  5. Validate an approved correction at the normal baud rate and traffic load.

Worked example

A model network has termination at its two trunk ends. A new mid-bus device arrives with its termination enabled, adding another load. The observed failure starts with the addition, but the correct response is to verify the complete design rather than removing arbitrary resistors.

Quick diagnostic reference

Item Purpose
Termination Control reflections at designed endpoints
Biasing Define idle behavior where required
Reference Keep interface within specified limits

The mistake to avoid

Changing baud rate may mask an installation weakness. It does not prove that termination, reference voltages, or loading are within equipment limits.

How to verify the fix

Confirm error-free representative traffic, documented endpoint settings, and stable communication with every intended node. Preserve the physical bus drawing and component settings for the next expansion.

Field-work boundary: These are educational diagnostic guides. Use the exact equipment manuals and approved site procedures. Electrical testing and machinery changes belong to qualified, authorized personnel; control hazardous energy and validate affected functions before release.
