Your PLC Trend Shows a Slow Oscillation? It Could Be Aliasing

A trend can display a frequency that does not exist in the process. Sampling a fast signal too slowly allows different physical waveforms to produce the same recorded points. Investigate measurement bandwidth before retuning an apparently oscillating loop.

What is happening?

Input filtering, acquisition, task execution, historian storage, and rendering all affect the evidence. Faster screen refresh cannot recover unacquired samples. The measurement plan must consider signal bandwidth and filtering before the relevant sampling stage.

Check these five things

  1. Identify the physical variation and its plausible fastest components.

  2. List module, task, historian, and display intervals separately.

  3. Check anti-alias filtering before acquisition.

  4. Compare with suitable higher-bandwidth equipment under an approved test plan.

  5. Validate acquisition and storage against the evidence actually required.

Worked example

An ideal 11 Hz sine wave sampled at 10 samples per second can appear as a 1 Hz pattern. Reading only that chart could send maintenance searching for a slow process cycle that does not exist. Real equipment adds noise, filtering, and timing variation.

The mistake to avoid

Sampling just above twice a nominal frequency is not a complete practical design. Harmonics, filter roll-off, and timing jitter influence which variations remain measurable.

How to verify the fix

Apply known test signals through the complete acquisition chain, including near its intended bandwidth boundary. Document which variations the resulting trend can reliably show and where a different measurement method is necessary.
