One Motor Phase Draws More Current? Do Not Blame the Motor Yet

Unequal phase current can originate in the supply, connections, drive, or motor. Preserve measurements from the complete system before choosing a replacement.

Conceptual diagnosis; energized measurements belong to qualified, authorized personnel.

What is happening?

Current imbalance is evidence of unequal loading of the electrical phases, but it does not identify the cause by itself. PWM drive outputs also require instruments and methods suitable for that waveform.

Check these five things

  1. Record motor load, drive state, and operating frequency.

  2. Use qualified personnel and suitable measurement equipment.

  3. Compare all three currents under the same operating condition.

  4. Evaluate corresponding voltage evidence using the approved method.

  5. Correlate imbalance with connections, supply events, and motor condition.

Worked example

Illustrative phase currents of 9, 10, and 11 A average 10 A. The maximum deviation is 1 A, or 10% of the average using that calculation convention. A diagnosis still needs the applicable acceptance method and supporting voltage evidence.

The mistake to avoid
