SSR Current Is Within Rating but It Overheats? Read the Thermal Conditions

An SSR current rating assumes specified thermal conditions. If it overheats below its headline rating, inspect heat-sink selection, mounting, ambient temperature, and spacing before changing the load limit.

Thermal calculations and installation must follow the exact SSR documentation.

What is happening?

Solid-state conduction creates heat that must leave the device. Datasheet derating curves and mounting instructions define usable current under actual conditions. A heat sink that fits mechanically is not proof of adequate thermal performance.

Check these five things

  1. Record SSR model, load current, duty, and cabinet ambient.

  2. Check the specified heat sink and thermal mounting method.

  3. Inspect clearances and airflow under approved procedures.

  4. Compare the installation with the derating curve.

  5. Have the responsible engineer validate any redesign.

Worked example

A teaching SSR works on an open test bench but runs hot in a crowded enclosure. The same electrical load now operates at higher ambient temperature with reduced airflow. The installation has changed even though the current has not.
