Servo Brake Releases Late? Don\’t Tune Around a Mechanical Timing Problem

A brake that does not release as intended can make an axis look overloaded or poorly tuned. Compare the commanded brake sequence with the supported drive and motor behavior. On gravity-loaded axes, braking and load support are particularly important parts of the engineered system.

What is happening?
A holding brake, drive torque, and motion command have a coordinated application role. Brake capabilities and permitted duty vary; a holding brake should not be assumed suitable for repeated dynamic stopping. Electrical indication of a brake command does not independently prove mechanical release.
Check these five things

Identify the motor brake type and its documented function, timing, and duty limits.

Record brake command, axis enable, motion request, and relevant drive diagnostics around the event.

Compare the sequence with the approved drive/motor commissioning configuration.

Have qualified personnel inspect electrical and mechanical brake condition under the required supported-load and isolation procedure.

Validate the approved sequence and fault response without bypassing brake or safety controls.
Worked example
A bench model starts a motion request before its simulated brake-release interval has elapsed. Torque demand rises while movement is delayed. Increasing servo gain would not correct the sequence mismatch represented by that model.

Confirm the required release, holding, stopping, and fault behavior using the manufacturer's and machine builder's acceptance procedure.
