RTD Reads Warmer Than the Process? Check Excitation Self-Heating

An RTD measurement requires excitation current, which also generates heat in the sensor. If a probe reads high in low-flow or poorly conducting conditions, consider self-heating as part of the error budget.

What is happening?
Electrical dissipation follows current squared times resistance. The resulting temperature rise depends on how the sensor transfers heat to its surroundings. A configuration acceptable in one medium may behave differently in another.
Check these five things

Identify RTD type and configured excitation.

Read the sensor dissipation and installation guidance.

Compare response in the actual medium with an appropriate reference.

Check whether the module offers supported excitation choices.

Validate any reviewed change across the intended conditions.
Worked example
For an illustrative 100-ohm element, 1 mA produces 0.1 mW of electrical heating. Doubling current makes dissipation four times greater. These power values do not directly give temperature error without the sensor thermal characteristics and installation conditions.

The mistake to avoid
Reducing current arbitrarily can worsen signal-to-noise performance or violate module requirements. Use supported settings and an appropriate measurement design.
How to verify the fix
Compare accuracy and noise at representative temperatures and flow conditions. Record excitation and installation assumptions with the calibration evidence.
