A sensor can have power and still be incompatible with the PLC input circuit. PNP and NPN describe how the sensor output switches current, while the input module must provide the complementary current path. Read the complete circuit instead of relying on a supplier's shorthand label.

What is happening?
In a typical DC arrangement, a PNP output sources current toward the load and pairs with a sinking input circuit. An NPN output sinks current from the load and pairs with a sourcing input circuit. Terminology can be inconsistent in catalogs, so the manufacturer's wiring diagram is the deciding reference.
Check these five things

Record the exact sensor suffix and output type. Similar housings may contain different output circuits or configurable modes.

Identify the input module's supported wiring and group common. Some modules support only one arrangement; others require specific configuration.

Draw the intended current path from supply through the switching device and input circuit back to return. A missing path explains more than wire colors alone.

Check voltage range, on-state drop, off-state leakage, and input thresholds against both data sheets. Mechanical fit does not establish electrical compatibility.

With power isolated as required, have qualified personnel verify wiring against the approved diagram. Use an appropriate interface only when it is properly engineered.
Worked example
A replacement sensor has the same connector but an NPN output, while the existing input group was designed for PNP sensors. Its power indicator is normal, yet the expected input current path is absent. The correct remedy is a compatible design, not randomly moving the common terminal.
