Replacement I/O Module Rejected? Electronic Keying May Be Doing Its Job
An electronic-keying mismatch is evidence that the installed device differs from the configured expectation. It is not an instruction to disable keying. Compare the exact hardware and revision requirements before allowing the controller to exchange I/O with the replacement.

What is happening?
Rockwell describes keying modes such as Exact Match and Compatible Module with different acceptance rules. Compatibility is not the same as a matching enclosure or channel count. Device identity, supported behavior, firmware, and the application's requirements must align before the replacement is accepted.
Check these five things

Record the configured and installed catalog numbers, series, revisions, and the exact diagnostic message.

Check the manufacturer's replacement and firmware compatibility guidance for that combination.

Review whether the project intentionally requires an exact revision or supports a compatible replacement.

Apply the approved hardware or configuration correction with a documented rollback plan.

Perform the required channel and function checks after the connection becomes healthy.
Worked example
A spare module has the expected product family but a different revision. Exact Match rejects it. That rejection identifies a comparison to resolve; it does not establish that switching to another keying mode is acceptable for this machine.

The mistake to avoid
