PID Keeps Overcorrecting Before Anything Happens? Measure Dead Time

A controller can overreact while waiting for a delayed process response. Measure the delay between an approved input change and the first credible process movement.

What is happening?

Transport distance, mixing, sensing location, and communication can delay visible feedback. Dead time differs from a gradual response that starts immediately. Both matter, but they produce different evidence in a carefully timestamped trend.

Check these five things

  1. Record command and measured actuator movement together.

  2. Locate the first credible PV response above normal noise.

  3. Separate actuator delay from process transport delay.

  4. Check measurement filtering and timestamp alignment.

  5. Use the observed dynamics in the reviewed control design.

Worked example

A teaching conveyor carries material six meters from an actuator to a sensor at two meters per second. Transport alone introduces approximately three seconds of delay. Rapid repeated corrections during that interval cannot yet be judged by the downstream measurement.

The mistake to avoid

Do not declare dead time from a low-resolution trend. Sampling, filtering, and clock offsets can make an immediate small response appear late.

How to verify the fix

Repeat the observation at representative operating rates with approved perturbations. Verify that the chosen control behavior remains acceptable across the measured delay range.
