Scale Reads Correctly Empty but Wrong When Loaded? Zero Isn\’t Calibration

A zero adjustment proves only one point on a weighing system. A scale can read zero perfectly and still report the wrong load because of span, units, mechanics, or signal configuration. Check known loads across the intended range before accepting the measurement.

What is happening?
Offset and sensitivity are different properties. Mechanical binding, load-path changes, and unsuitable installation can also produce errors that a numerical span adjustment cannot properly resolve. The complete weighing system must be evaluated using the relevant calibration and maintenance requirements.
Check these five things

Confirm the displayed units and the intended gross, net, and tare definitions.

Inspect the approved mechanical load path and look for unintended contact or binding through the maintenance procedure.

Verify transducer sensitivity and input scaling against the installed sensor and electronics.

Use suitable traceable test loads and the site's calibration procedure at several points.

Compare increasing and decreasing loads, repeatability, and the return to zero.
Worked example
A training scale displays zero empty but shows 80 units for a known 100-unit test load. Another zero adjustment cannot fix that proportional error. The next investigation includes span configuration and the mechanical load path, not just the empty reading.

The mistake to avoid

How to verify the fix
Retain the calibration results and demonstrate acceptable accuracy and repeatability over the required range, not only at empty and full load.
