Load Cell Reading Drifts After a Cable Change? Check the Excitation Path

A load-cell cable replacement can change the measurement even when every conductor has continuity. Excitation, sense wiring, shielding, and the measurement configuration all matter. Compare the complete bridge interface before attempting to compensate with a new zero value.

What is happening?

Bridge-based load cells produce a small signal related to their excitation and applied load. Four-wire and six-wire arrangements differ in how excitation and sensing are handled. A conditioned transmitter output is another interface entirely. Use the transducer and input-module documentation together.

Check these five things

  1. Identify whether the installed device provides a raw bridge signal or a conditioned output.

  2. Compare conductor functions with both manufacturers' diagrams; do not rely on color alone.

  3. Check the configured excitation source and value against the sensor's requirements.

  4. Review supported sense connections and cable-length considerations through the approved electrical procedure.

  5. Validate zero and multiple known loads after the installation is corrected.

Worked example

A bridge sensor's signal is specified relative to excitation, but the replacement interface is configured with an incorrect excitation assumption. Re-zeroing can hide the offset at no load while leaving the span wrong. A multi-point check exposes the remaining error.

The mistake to avoid

Do not connect a raw millivolt bridge directly to an arbitrary voltage input and expect the same result as a suitable bridge measurement module.

How to verify the fix

Record the interface configuration and repeatable results across the approved calibration range, including loading and unloading where required.
