Automatic parameter replacement is helpful only when the stored parameter set is the one the machine should use. After replacing an IO-Link device, verify the master's validation and data-storage configuration. A successful connection does not prove that the intended settings were restored.

What is happening?

IO-Link masters can support parameter storage and replacement workflows with specific conditions and modes. Device identity checks and the direction of parameter transfer matter. The master, device, and engineering tool may each show settings, so identify which copy is authoritative for the approved configuration.

Check these five things

  1. Record the original device identity and accepted parameter set before replacement where possible.

  2. Read the master's configured validation and storage mode for the affected port.

  3. Compare the replacement's identity and supported parameter behavior with the documented replacement procedure.

  4. Verify the actual device parameters after the transfer rather than relying only on the online status.

  5. Update the approved backup and maintenance record after the final settings are accepted.

Worked example

A sensor is adjusted locally during troubleshooting, but the machine's stored replacement configuration remains unchanged. A later replacement can restore the older accepted set. That may be correct or incorrect depending on whether the adjustment was approved and incorporated into the backup.
