Ethernet Link Is Up but Errors Keep Rising? Inspect the Cable Path

A lit link LED does not establish a clean Ethernet channel. Repeated frame errors or link renegotiations can reveal a physical problem that ordinary ping tests miss. Record counters and event timing before replacing several components at once.

What is happening?

Connectors, cable damage, environmental exposure, installation geometry, and incompatible link settings can affect communication. Error counters provide evidence at a particular interface, but their names and meaning vary by switch. Diagnose the segment and direction indicated by the equipment rather than treating every dropped packet as a cable defect.

Check these five things

  1. Capture the relevant port counters, link transitions, negotiated settings, and timestamps.

  2. Compare errors with movement, vibration, cabinet activity, or nearby equipment switching.

  3. Inspect the documented cable route and connectors through the approved maintenance procedure.

  4. Use suitable industrial-network test equipment and a controlled substitution test when authorized.

  5. Change one suspect segment at a time and compare counters over a representative period.

Worked example

A cabinet link remains up, but errors increase whenever a moving cable carrier reaches one end of travel. That correlation supports inspecting the flexing segment. It does not prove the switch electronics are defective or justify replacing every network device.

The mistake to avoid
