Device Gets 24 V at the Supply but Less at Its Terminals? Count Every Drop

Supply voltage is not the same as voltage at the device. Protection components, cable resistance, and connections consume part of the available margin. Build a voltage budget when a device operates near its minimum input.

What is happening?

Series voltage drops depend on current and component characteristics. Startup may create a different condition from steady operation. Both outgoing and return paths contribute to the complete circuit.

Check these five things

  1. Record device input limits and startup requirements.

  2. List series components in supply and return paths.

  3. Use documented current-dependent drops and cable data.

  4. Arrange qualified measurements under the approved procedure.

  5. Validate the complete worst-case operating margin.

Worked example

In a teaching budget, a 24.0 V source loses 0.7 V in one component and 1.0 V across the complete cable path at the assumed current, leaving 22.3 V. Those illustrative drops are not universal diode or cable values; actual specifications determine the result.

The mistake to avoid
