Hydraulic Unit Gets Hot While Doing Nothing? Follow the Bypass Flow

A hydraulic unit can generate substantial heat while the actuator is stationary. Flow across a pressure drop still consumes power.

What is happening?

Hydraulic power associated with pressure drop and flow can be estimated in kilowatts as bar times liters per minute divided by 600. A relief or other bypass path can turn that power into heat instead of useful motion.

Check these five things

  1. Identify the intended idle circuit state.

  2. Review pump flow and unloading behavior.

  3. Locate the pressure drops associated with circulating flow.

  4. Compare thermal rise with command and valve status.

  5. Have unexpected bypass operation reviewed against the schematic.

Worked example

An illustrative 20 L/min flowing across a 100 bar pressure drop represents about 3.33 kW of hydraulic power. If that path does no useful work, it contributes heat. This estimate does not directly predict oil temperature without the thermal balance.

The mistake to avoid

Do not reduce relief settings or block a bypass to experiment. Pressure protection and unloading functions must remain consistent with the approved design.

After correction, compare idle pressure, flow evidence, energy use, and temperature rise under matching ambient and operating conditions.
