Stopping a hydraulic pump does not establish that stored energy is gone. An accumulator or trapped load can retain energy after the motor stops.

What is happening?
An accumulator stores energy through its designed pressure-storage mechanism. Check valves and isolated chambers can keep parts of a circuit pressurized independently of the pump indication. Safe access depends on the equipment-specific isolation and verification procedure.
Check these five things

Identify accumulators and trapped-energy locations on the drawings.

Confirm the approved isolation procedure covers those locations.

Distinguish pump status from pressure and energy state.

Check that maintenance documentation matches installed equipment.

Worked example
In a teaching schematic, a check valve separates an accumulator from the stopped pump. The motor indicator is off while the accumulator branch remains energized. The diagram demonstrates why one electrical status bit cannot represent the whole energy state.

The mistake to avoid

How to verify the fix
Have the responsible personnel validate the isolation documentation and indications. Record any design or labeling correction before returning the system to service.
