A powered electromagnetic flowmeter does not guarantee a valid flow measurement. Pipe filling and fluid conductivity are part of its operating requirements. Inspect quality and installation when readings become unstable during draining or product changes.

What is happening?
Electromagnetic flow measurement relies on suitable conductive liquid and the specified sensor conditions. Empty-pipe detection, grounding arrangements, and minimum conductivity vary by model. Process state must remain distinguishable from valid zero flow.
Check these five things

Worked example
A teaching line partially drains after a batch. The instrument remains online, but the measurement no longer meets its filled-pipe assumptions. Recording every resulting number as valid can corrupt totals even though communication is healthy.

How to verify the fix
Verify valid flow, valid zero, and intended invalid-state handling. Confirm totalization excludes or explicitly handles measurements that do not meet the meter conditions.
