Replacement Encoder Has Extra Wires? Check the Interface Before Connecting

Matching encoder supply voltage is not enough. Differential and single-ended signal interfaces have different receiver requirements.

What is happening?

A differential interface uses complementary signal pairs, while a single-ended interface references a signal to a common. Input voltage range, output driver type, termination, and supported wiring all affect compatibility.

Check these five things

  1. Read both encoder output and receiver input specifications.

  2. Identify A, B, and index signal pairs where applicable.

  3. Confirm voltage levels and common-mode requirements.

  4. Use the manufacturer wiring and termination arrangement.

  5. Validate the interface before enabling motion.

Worked example

A replacement encoder offers A, A-complement, B, and B-complement while the old device exposed only A and B. The extra conductors are part of the interface design, not spare outputs to combine arbitrarily. The receiver manual determines the supported connection.
