An OEE improvement can come from a changed calculation rather than changed production. Audit planned production time, counts, and ideal cycle time before celebrating a dashboard jump. Consistent definitions are essential for useful comparison.

What is happening?
A common OEE formulation uses good count times ideal cycle time divided by planned production time. The result depends on product-specific cycle assumptions and which time is included. Breaks, changeovers, and downtime need an explicit agreed classification.
Check these five things

Record the exact formula and units used in both versions.

Compare planned production boundaries and exclusions.

Verify good count, total count, and reject handling.

Check ideal cycle time for the actual product.

Recalculate a known shift independently before accepting the dashboard.
Worked example
In a simplified example, 300 good pieces at a one-minute ideal cycle require 300 ideal minutes. Dividing by 400 planned minutes gives 75 percent; dividing by 360 gives about 83.3 percent. The output is unchanged, but the denominator changes the metric.

The mistake to avoid
Quietly excluding difficult periods makes historical comparisons misleading. Definition changes should be documented and, where appropriate, historical reports recalculated consistently.
How to verify the fix
Reconcile several shifts against source counts and time records. Publish the calculation policy beside the dashboard so engineering and production interpret the metric consistently.
