Air Pressure Looks Fine at Idle but Collapses in Production? Check the Filter

A static gauge reading says little about pressure loss during demand. If actuators weaken only when several consumers operate, compare pressure across the air-preparation path under representative flow. A restricted or undersized component may look normal at idle.
Pneumatic testing requires approved pressure-rated equipment and energy-control procedures.
What is happening?
Filters, regulators, tubing, and fittings create pressure losses that depend on flow and condition. Contamination can increase restriction. Supply pressure at one point does not establish the pressure available at the active actuator.
Check these five things
-
Record which consumers operate when the symptom appears.
-
Identify safe approved measurement points upstream and downstream.
-
Compare pressure during representative demand rather than only at rest.
-
Inspect filter service condition and component sizing against documentation.
-
Validate a reviewed repair with simultaneous normal consumers.
Worked example
A teaching system reads 6 bar on both sides while idle. During a high-demand cycle, the downstream value falls while upstream remains relatively stable. The pressure difference localizes a restriction but does not identify whether filter, regulator, or another intervening component is responsible.
Quick diagnostic reference
| Observation | Investigation |
|---|---|
| Both sides fall | Upstream supply |
| Only downstream falls | Intervening restriction |
| One branch affected | Local distribution |
The mistake to avoid
Raising supply pressure can mask the loss and exceed downstream requirements. Correct the restriction or sizing issue within the approved operating envelope.
How to verify the fix
Verify pressure and actuator performance during the highest intended simultaneous demand. Record service findings and establish the documented maintenance interval.
