Capacitive Level Sensor Stays On After Emptying? Inspect the Residue

An empty vessel can still present material to a capacitive sensor. Coating, moisture, or product residue near the sensing face may change the electric field enough to affect switching. Inspect actual empty conditions before teaching a new threshold.

What is happening?

Capacitive sensing responds to changes in capacitance associated with material and geometry. Tank wall, product properties, buildup, and mounting all matter. A sensitivity adjustment that works when clean may fail after normal production residue accumulates.

  2. Inspect residue and moisture using approved access and cleaning procedures.

Worked example

A teaching tank empties but leaves a wet coating on its inner wall beside an external sensor. The sensor continues indicating material. Teaching it while coated may improve empty detection yet reduce sensitivity to a different low-density product, so both conditions need evaluation.
