A thermocouple reading depends on more than the probe temperature. If the indicated process temperature shifts with cabinet conditions, inspect cold-junction compensation and the terminal arrangement before replacing the probe.

What is happening?
Thermocouples produce a voltage related to temperature differences. The measuring system uses a reference-junction temperature to calculate the probe temperature. A wrong compensation source or thermal mismatch at connections can create an error that follows the cabinet environment.
Check these five things

Confirm the configured thermocouple type and compensation mode.

Locate the physical transition to the measuring instrument terminals.

Check the specified terminal block and compensation sensor.

Compare process and terminal conditions with an appropriate independent reference.

Test the approved installation across its expected ambient range.
Worked example
A teaching setup holds its probe at a stable reference while warm air reaches the input terminals. If the measured value moves with the terminals, the reference-junction path deserves investigation. This observation narrows the problem but does not by itself identify a failed compensation sensor.

The mistake to avoid
A constant software offset cannot generally correct a temperature-dependent compensation error. It may align one test point while worsening another ambient condition.
How to verify the fix
Verify multiple process temperatures and representative cabinet conditions. Record reference instruments and uncertainty so agreement at one point is not mistaken for complete calibration.
