An EtherCAT working-counter mismatch indicates that a datagram was not processed as expected. It is a useful localization clue, but it does not independently identify a broken cable or defective terminal.

What is happening?
The expected working counter depends on the datagram and configured participation. Device state, topology, addressing, and process-data configuration can affect the result. Compare actual and expected values alongside link and slave-state diagnostics.
Check these five things

Save the first mismatch and affected datagram or group.

Compare expected topology with detected devices.

Check slave states and the first device reporting a transition or error.

Inspect link and error counters around the affected segment.

Validate any repair with the original topology and representative cyclic load.
Worked example
A model loses participation from a group of downstream terminals at once. Replacing the last terminal because its input is missing ignores the common upstream boundary. Mapping the first changed state and affected datagrams provides a more useful starting point.

The mistake to avoid
Do not reduce the expected configuration merely to make the working counter match. That can remove required I/O from the application without restoring the machine.
How to verify the fix
Confirm stable expected counters, normal slave states, and correct physical I/O associations across a controlled restart and representative operation. Record which segment failed and the evidence supporting the repair.
