PLC cabinet intermittent fault warm temperature - PLC Playground troubleshooting guide

Machine Works Cold but Faults After an Hour? Capture the Thermal Pattern

A fault that follows operating time or cabinet temperature deserves a thermal-context investigation. That pattern does not prove a failed PLC, but it helps design a better evidence capture. Compare temperature, load, ventilation state, and component diagnostics over the same period.

Original thermal-pattern investigation; cabinet assessment requires qualified personnel.

What is happening?

Equipment has specified environmental and loading limits, and installed conditions can differ from room temperature. Heat sources, blocked airflow, duty cycle, and component deterioration may affect operation. Time correlation is a clue to test; several nonthermal processes can also change after an hour.

Check these five things

  1. Record repeatable fault timing, ambient conditions, operating load, and recent maintenance.

  2. Compare component temperature ratings and installation clearances with the cabinet design.

  3. Use approved monitoring methods to capture relevant temperatures and diagnostics without creating exposure to energized parts.

  4. Inspect cooling and airflow components through the site's maintenance procedure.

  5. Repeat the representative operating cycle after the identified issue is corrected.

Worked example

A cabinet runs normally after startup, then several devices report warnings during sustained high load. A temperature trend and ventilation inspection can test a thermal hypothesis. Replacing the first device that alarms may leave the shared condition unchanged.

Quick diagnostic reference

Several devices affected Shared environment or supply
Only one operating mode Duty and heat generation

The mistake to avoid

Leaving a cabinet door open is not a permanent engineered cooling correction and may change protection, contamination, and access conditions.

How to verify the fix

Confirm operation within the equipment's specified environment over the relevant duty cycle and retain the before-and-after diagnostic evidence.

Field-work boundary: These are educational diagnostic guides. Use the exact equipment manuals and approved site procedures. Electrical testing and machinery changes belong to qualified, authorized personnel; control hazardous energy and validate affected functions before release.
