24 V Supply Reads Fine Until the Machine Moves? Check Voltage Under Load

A 24 V reading with the machine idle does not prove the control supply remains adequate when loads switch. A brief drop at a remote device can reset electronics or corrupt diagnostics while the supply's own display looks normal. Compare event timing and voltage at the relevant load through an approved measurement plan.

What is happening?

Current flowing through wiring and connections produces voltage drop. Dynamic loads and power-supply limiting behavior can make the loaded condition differ from an idle measurement. A normal reading at the supply terminals does not establish the voltage available across the distant device's supply and return terminals.

Check these five things

  1. Record which devices reset and which loads switch at the same time. Use timestamps or an event log to identify a repeatable relationship.

  2. Compare the power-supply rating and branch design with the documented steady and transient load requirements.

  3. Have qualified personnel measure using suitable equipment and the site's electrical work procedure, including relevant transient capture.

  4. Inspect the affected supply and return path under the required isolation procedure for connection or conductor problems.

  5. Correct the identified design or maintenance issue and repeat the approved representative-load test.

Worked example

An illustrative branch carries 2 A through a total supply-and-return resistance of 0.8 ohm. The calculated drop is 1.6 V. A 24.0 V source would therefore provide 22.4 V at the load in that simplified steady-state case, before considering other effects or device limits.

The mistake to avoid

Do not raise the supply setting blindly. Other devices may already be near their permitted maximum voltage.

How to verify the fix

Check all relevant devices remain within their documented voltage limits during representative load transitions and confirm resets no longer occur.
