PROFINET Device Is Online but a Module Is Red? Compare the Subslots
A reachable PROFINET device can still have an incompatible module or submodule configuration. Compare expected and actual configuration at the reported slot and subslot.

What is happening?
Device identity and cyclic submodule compatibility are separate checks. Module order, variants, configuration files, and supported submodules influence the expected layout. A network-level success does not prove every process-data item is valid.
Check these five things

Read the diagnostic at the lowest reported component level.

Record slot, subslot, and expected module identity.

Compare the installed hardware and actual configuration.

Check the applicable device-description version.

Review the engineering change before downloading a correction.
Worked example
A teaching remote-I/O station has the correct station identity, but slot 3 contains a different input variant than the project expects. The station remains reachable while that submodule reports a mismatch. Reassigning the IP address would not correct the hardware definition.

The mistake to avoid
Do not select a similar-looking module merely to clear diagnostics. Verify channel behavior, data layout, and compatibility.
How to verify the fix
Confirm diagnostics clear and validate affected channel mapping, quality, and engineering units under the approved commissioning procedure.
