Hydraulic cylinder drift valve off load holding — PLC Playground troubleshooting guide

Cylinder Drifts with the Valve Off? Off Is Not a Holding Guarantee

A de-energized directional valve does not automatically provide secure load holding. Review the hydraulic design when a stationary cylinder drifts.

Schematic diagnosis only; no suspended-load field test is described.

What is happening?

Spool leakage, cylinder leakage, load forces, trapped pressure, and valve-center configuration all affect movement. A command bit describes an electrical state; it does not establish a rated mechanical holding function.

Check these five things

  1. Identify the approved load-holding arrangement.

  2. Review the actual valve center and pilot circuit.

  3. Record drift under the documented safe diagnostic conditions.

  4. Use manufacturer-approved methods to distinguish leakage paths.

  5. Escalate any mismatch between holding requirements and design.

Worked example

In an offline schematic review, a neutral spool state still permits a leakage path while gravity acts on the load. The PLC output being false does not remove that force. The review asks whether the specified holding hardware addresses the required condition.

The mistake to avoid

Do not disconnect lines or rely on a suspended load while diagnosing drift. Secure hazardous movement through the approved isolation and support procedure.

How to verify the fix

Validate the repaired system against its documented holding and motion requirements using authorized personnel and the prescribed test method.

Field-work boundary: These are educational diagnostic guides. Use the exact equipment manuals and approved site procedures. Electrical testing and machinery changes belong to qualified, authorized personnel; control hazardous energy and validate affected functions before release.
