A pneumatic cylinder that pauses and jumps at low speed may be showing stick-slip. The pressure needed to start motion can differ from the pressure needed to keep moving.

What is happening?
Seal friction, guidance, side load, air compressibility, and flow control interact. Pressure can build while motion is stuck, then release into movement once breakaway occurs. Very low speed may lie outside the intended performance of the selected actuator.
Check these five things

Worked example
In a teaching model, pressure increases while the piston remains stationary. After breakaway, stored compressed-air energy produces a short movement burst. The repeated pattern differs from a PLC command that is itself switching on and off.

The mistake to avoid

How to verify the fix
Validate smoothness and cycle repeatability at the required speeds and loads after the approved correction. Confirm end-of-stroke behavior remains acceptable.
