The Drive Says 1500 RPM—Why Is the Conveyor Shaft Only Doing 50?

A correct motor speed can produce an unexpected output speed when the gearbox ratio is misunderstood. Establish which shaft every speed value describes.

Ideal kinematic example; losses and mechanical ratings require separate checks.

What is happening?

A reduction ratio relates input speed to output speed. Additional belt or chain stages can multiply the reduction. PLC engineering units may already include a transmission ratio, making a second conversion an application error.

Check these five things

  1. Identify motor, gearbox, and driven-shaft measurement points.

  2. Read the actual installed ratio.

  3. Include any additional transmission stages.

  4. Trace drive and PLC speed-unit conversions.

  5. Compare predicted and observed output speed under approved conditions.

Worked example

A teaching 30:1 reducer driven at 1500 rpm gives an ideal output speed of 50 rpm. Adding a 2:1 belt reduction produces 25 rpm at the final shaft. Applying the gearbox conversion twice in software would display an incorrect value.

The mistake to avoid

A ratio calculation does not establish available torque, thermal capacity, or maximum permitted speed. Those require the equipment ratings and mechanical design.

How to verify the fix

Confirm units at the HMI, controller, and drive. Record the complete transmission chain so future replacements preserve the correct scale.
