Motor Runs Below Synchronous Speed? That May Be Normal Slip

An induction motor normally runs below synchronous speed while producing motoring torque. Compare measured speed with pole count, supply frequency, and operating load before declaring a speed fault.

What is happening?
Synchronous speed in revolutions per minute is 120 times electrical frequency divided by pole count. The difference between synchronous and rotor speed is slip. Drive compensation and control mode influence the observed behavior.
Check these five things

Confirm the motor is an induction type.

Read the pole count or rated speed from reliable motor data.

Record actual operating frequency rather than only the speed request.

Compare shaft speed under equivalent load.

Check configured slip compensation and feedback mode.
Worked example
A four-pole teaching motor supplied at 50 Hz has a synchronous speed of 1500 rpm. A measured 1450 rpm corresponds to approximately 3.33% slip. This arithmetic describes the example; it is not an acceptable-slip limit for every motor.

The mistake to avoid
Do not compare the driven shaft after a gearbox directly with motor synchronous speed. Include transmission ratio and identify the measurement location.

Compare nameplate conditions, actual load, and repeated speed measurements. Investigate deviations using the motor and drive specifications.
