Heating and Cooling Fight Near Setpoint? Inspect the Split-Range Crossover

Oscillation near a heating-to-cooling crossover may come from split-range behavior. Inspect both actuator commands around the transition before retuning the entire loop.

What is happening?

A split-range function maps one controller output to multiple actuators. A gap can create a region with little corrective action; overlap can operate opposing utilities together. The desired mapping depends on process behavior, valve characteristics, and operating constraints.

Check these five things

  1. Plot each actuator command against the controller output.

  2. Locate gaps, overlap, and reversal points.

  3. Compare command with actual valve response near crossover.

  4. Review the process reason for the selected mapping.

  5. Model small disturbances on both sides of crossover.

Worked example

An illustrative mapping ends heating at 45% controller output and starts cooling at 55%. The middle ten percentage points command neither utility. A process requiring continuous corrective action may drift through this region before a valve responds.

The mistake to avoid
