PID Looks Badly Tuned? Check Whether SP and PV Use the Same Scale

A PID cannot interpret a setpoint in degrees correctly when its process input represents percent. A scaling mismatch can look like extreme tuning trouble.

What is happening?

The error calculation is meaningful only when setpoint and process value share compatible units and ranges. Some instructions normalize internally; others require explicit engineering-unit configuration. HMI labels do not prove the underlying numbers match.

Check these five things

  1. Trace the raw input through every scaling stage.

  2. Record the units at the actual PID input pin.

  3. Check setpoint limits and the HMI write conversion.

  4. Inspect internal normalization settings in the manual.

  5. Compare known low, middle, and high values in simulation.

Worked example

In a 0–200 degree teaching range, 50% represents 100 degrees. Feeding 50 into a PID that expects degrees while requesting 100 creates a false 50-degree error. Correcting gain cannot repair that unit mismatch.

The mistake to avoid

Do not correct only the screen display. The controller may still calculate with mismatched values while the operator sees apparently sensible numbers.

How to verify the fix

Verify three points, alarm thresholds, setpoint entry, and output response after the range correction. Record the end-to-end units explicitly.
