Two Gas Flowmeters Disagree? Check Actual Versus Standard Volume

Gas volume flow is incomplete without pressure and temperature reference conditions. Two instruments can report different numbers for the same gas stream when one reports actual volume and another standardized volume.

What is happening?
Gas volume changes with pressure and temperature. Standard or normal volume uses declared reference conditions, which must be explicitly identified. Composition and compressibility can also matter; a unit label alone does not define every assumption.
Check these five things

Record whether each value is actual, standard, normal, or mass flow.

Read the configured reference pressure and temperature.

Check absolute pressure and temperature units in compensation.

Compare gas composition and model assumptions.

Reconcile values using the approved calculation method.
Worked example
In an idealized constant-temperature example, gas at twice the absolute reference pressure occupies about half the volume for the same amount of gas. Actual volumetric flow can therefore differ from reference volumetric flow without either instrument being miscalibrated.

The mistake to avoid
Do not assume every SCFM or normal-volume label uses identical reference conditions. Read the instrument configuration and applicable reporting contract.
How to verify the fix
Verify reference conditions and units through instrument, PLC, HMI, and reports. Document the conversion assumptions and compare a controlled operating point.
