An extreme temperature can be an open-sensor response rather than real process heat. Check channel diagnostics and configured burnout behavior before interpreting the numerical value alone.
Burnout behavior is input-specific and is not a universal temperature value.
What is happening?
Some inputs use detection circuitry that drives an open thermocouple reading toward an extreme or reports a dedicated fault. The behavior, delay, and interaction with measurement accuracy are module-specific. Software must preserve quality information.
Check these five things

Worked example
A teaching temperature channel jumps to its configured high-fault behavior after a lead opens. Treating the number as ordinary temperature creates a misleading process diagnosis. The application should distinguish the measurement fault while still following its approved protective response.
