A high-impedance meter can display capacitively coupled voltage on an otherwise disconnected conductor. That possibility helps diagnosis, but it does not establish that a circuit is safe. Treat unexplained voltage through the approved electrical verification process.

What is happening?
Meter input impedance affects how a weakly coupled source appears. Instruments with different measurement modes load the circuit differently. The appropriate method depends on circuit type, equipment sensitivity, and safety requirements.
Check these five things

Worked example
A teaching isolated conductor runs beside an energized cable and produces a reading on a high-impedance instrument. The reading may reflect coupling, but another installation could have a genuine backfeed with similar initial appearance. The number alone does not distinguish them.
