OPC UA Misses Intermediate Changes? Check Queue Size and Overflow

A subscription can deliver the newest value while omitting intermediate changes. If a diagnostic trace loses short-lived states, inspect monitored-item queues, filtering, and overflow information instead of assuming every sampled value is retained.

Queue behavior follows OPC UA and the actual client/server implementation.

What is happening?

Notifications generated between publishing cycles need buffering. Queue configuration and discard policy influence what survives when updates arrive faster than delivery. A queue of one is suitable for some latest-value uses but not every event-history requirement.

Check these five things

  1. Define whether the application needs latest state or every event.

  2. Record sampling, publishing, queue size, and discard policy.

  3. Inspect overflow or status indicators supported by the client.

  4. Test a known burst of changes.

  5. Choose a supported event or history mechanism when completeness is required.

Worked example

A teaching value changes several times between deliveries. A latest-value queue retains the final state, so the chart never shows earlier transitions. Increasing chart refresh alone does not restore notifications already discarded upstream.

Latest value Is newest state enough?
Every transition Is queue capacity sufficient?
Auditable history Use appropriate event storage?

The mistake to avoid

A larger queue cannot compensate indefinitely for a consumer that remains slower than incoming data. Capacity and sustainable throughput both matter.

How to verify the fix

Compare the delivered sequence with a known generated sequence under burst and sustained load. Document any intentional loss policy and make unintended overflow visible.

Field-work boundary: These are educational diagnostic guides. Use the exact equipment manuals and approved site procedures. Electrical testing and machinery changes belong to qualified, authorized personnel; control hazardous energy and validate affected functions before release.
