PLC Parallel Branch Waits Forever? Define the Join Condition

Parallel actions need a precise rule for joining again. If one branch finishes but the overall sequence never continues, inspect which completion states the join expects and how interruptions affect them.

What is happening?

A join may require every participating branch to reach its designated completion point. A branch that is skipped, cancelled, or reset differently can make that impossible. The model must distinguish not required from incomplete.

Check these five things

  1. List branches participating in each operating variant.

  2. Identify the exact completion condition for each branch.

  3. Trace cancellation, faults, and optional equipment paths.

  4. Define join behavior for absent or intentionally skipped work.

  5. Test asymmetric completion and interrupted branches.

Worked example

A teaching machine runs two preparation branches, but one product variant omits branch B. The join still waits for B done, which is never produced. Marking B complete blindly could hide a required action; the variant participation contract must first be corrected.

The mistake to avoid

Using an OR where an AND was intended makes a stalled sequence move while work remains unfinished. Do not weaken the join condition just to remove waiting.

How to verify the fix

Verify each variant and every branch ordering, including a branch that faults or is cancelled. Record why the join is permitted to proceed in each case.
