HMI Button Released but the PLC Request Stayed On? Test the Missing Release

A press-and-release interface can fail if the application receives the press but never receives the corresponding release. Do not assume a screen object makes a maintained machine command safe. Review the button's documented behavior and the PLC's handling of lost or interrupted communication.

What is happening?
An HMI event, a transmitted tag write, and an accepted PLC request are separate stages. Different products implement momentary buttons differently. The application must define what happens on screen changes, runtime restarts, disconnects, and held inputs; a general-purpose HMI is not automatically a safety-rated hold-to-run control.
Check these five things

Read the exact button object's press, release, and communication-loss behavior.

Trace the HMI request separately from the final actuator command in the PLC.

Define the required request lifecycle and recovery behavior for the function.

Test release, screen navigation, disconnect, and runtime restart in an isolated simulator.

Implement the reviewed command-handling design using supported platform features and validate it before use.
Worked example
In a teaching interface, pressing writes one and releasing writes zero. Communication is interrupted between those writes, leaving the last received request at one. This exposes a design condition to handle; it does not imply every HMI momentary object behaves identically.

The mistake to avoid
Do not use an arbitrary timer as a universal substitute for a properly designed hold-to-run or safety function.

Demonstrate the complete request lifecycle and loss-of-communication response under the project's acceptance criteria.
