Absolute Encoder, Lost Position After Restart? Absolute Doesn\’t Mean Infallible

An absolute-feedback device does not remove every dependency involved in restoring machine position. Configuration, reference validity, supported retention behavior, and mechanical coupling still matter. Read the axis diagnostics before assuming another homing cycle is the correct recovery.

System-level reference check; recovery behavior depends on the exact feedback and axis configuration.

What is happening?

Absolute feedback and the controller's machine-coordinate reference are related but distinct. The system may need a valid stored relationship between them. Device replacement, configuration changes, feedback faults, and movement of mechanical components can invalidate assumptions even when an encoder reports a number.

Check these five things

  1. Record the feedback type, axis reference status, and exact startup diagnostic.

  2. Compare the installed encoder, motor, drive, and controller configuration with the accepted record.

  3. Review the manufacturer's absolute-position recovery and retention requirements.

  4. Check whether maintenance changed coupling, gearing, or the physical relationship to the machine.

  5. Recover position only through the approved referencing procedure and verify the resulting coordinates.

Worked example

A machine retains an encoder value, but a mechanical coupling is repositioned during maintenance. The number may still be available while its relationship to the load is wrong. Data availability alone cannot establish physical reference validity.

The mistake to avoid

Do not mark an axis homed simply to clear a startup condition. Establish the coordinate relationship required for limits and motion commands.
