Pressure Switch Says Ready but the Clamp Isn\’t Holding? Pressure Is Only One Clue

A pressure signal does not automatically prove that a clamp has contacted the workpiece or developed the required holding force. The measurement location and mechanism matter. Review what the ready condition actually demonstrates before treating it as complete process confirmation.

What is happening?
Fluid pressure and actuator force are related through the effective area in a simplified model, but friction, geometry, load paths, and contact conditions affect the real mechanism. A sensor upstream of a restriction or valve may not represent the relevant chamber. Safety-related holding functions require their own engineered validation.
Check these five things

Identify the pressure measurement location on the approved circuit drawing.

Define the physical condition the process needs: position, contact, pressure, force, or a validated combination.

Compare the existing ready logic with that requirement and its data-quality conditions.

Investigate mechanical and fluid-path discrepancies through qualified maintenance procedures.

Test the accepted confirmation logic using representative normal and abnormal conditions.
Worked example
A clamp circuit reaches its pressure threshold against a mechanical obstruction before contacting the intended workpiece. The pressure switch can be correct while the process condition is wrong. Additional application-specific evidence is needed to distinguish those states.

The mistake to avoid
Do not add an ordinary PLC pressure threshold and call it a validated safety function. The architecture and acceptance evidence must match the risk assessment.
How to verify the fix
Document which physical condition each signal proves and demonstrate the complete approved confirmation and fault response.
