Pneumatic Cylinder Is Slow Even With Good Pressure? Check the Exhaust

A healthy static supply-pressure reading does not prove air can enter and leave a cylinder fast enough. Restricted exhaust can slow motion even when the regulator looks normal. Compare pressure, flow-path configuration, and movement timing through an approved pneumatic diagnostic procedure.

What is happening?
Cylinder motion depends on pressure differences, load, and the available supply and exhaust paths. One-way flow controls may meter supply or exhaust according to their arrangement. Silencers, valves, tubing, and fittings can affect the path, while stored pneumatic and mechanical energy requires controlled isolation.
Check these five things

Record which direction is slow and whether the symptom changes with load or repeated cycles.

Read the pneumatic drawing and identify the intended meter-in or meter-out arrangement.

Compare component and tubing configuration with the accepted design, including recent replacements.

Inspect restrictions and component condition using the manufacturer's procedure after controlling hazardous energy.

Restore the approved configuration and measure stroke timing under representative conditions.
Worked example
A model cylinder slows mainly in one direction after a flow-control fitting is replaced. The replacement's direction and function do not match the drawing. Raising regulator pressure would not establish the intended exhaust path.

The mistake to avoid
