A proximity sensor that behaves correctly in free space can behave differently when surrounded by mounting metal. Flush and non-flush designs have different installation requirements. Check the bracket geometry before replacing a sensor that may be detecting its own surroundings.

What is happening?
The sensing field interacts with nearby conductive material according to the sensor design. Manufacturer clearance rules address surrounding metal and neighboring sensors. A matching thread diameter does not make two models mechanically interchangeable in the same bracket.
Check these five things

Confirm whether the exact sensor is specified for flush or non-flush mounting.

Compare the installed bracket and surrounding metal with the datasheet's clearance drawing.

Check spacing from adjacent sensors and the intended target path.

Use a controlled isolated test to separate free-space behavior from installed behavior.

Correct the mounting through the approved mechanical design and repeat the functional test.
Worked example
A non-flush sensor is installed deep inside a metal bracket because it shares the old sensor's thread size. It switches normally when removed but remains active when installed. That difference points toward the installation geometry, not necessarily damaged electronics.
