Inductive Sensor Misses the New Metal Part? Check the Material Factor

Changing a target from steel to another metal can change detection distance on some inductive sensors. A sensor that worked on the old part may now have too little operating margin. Compare the target material and geometry with the exact datasheet before moving the sensor closer.

What is happening?
Inductive sensor response depends on the design and target. Many models specify material correction factors; some are designed for equal range across metals. Nominal sensing distance is measured under defined conditions and does not replace the model's recommended operating-distance guidance.
Check these five things

Identify the sensor order number and the old and new target materials.

Read the datasheet's target, mounting, correction-factor, and operating-distance information.

Compare target size, thickness, approach direction, and installed gap with those conditions.

Assess mechanical clearance and approved mounting changes before adjustment.

Test representative parts across the permitted positional variation and machine movement.
Worked example
A datasheet may specify a lower relative range for aluminum than for its standard steel target. Copying the steel installation gap to the new part can leave detection intermittent. The actual factor must come from that sensor's data, not a generic table.

The mistake to avoid
Moving a sensor into a collision path to recover detection exchanges an electrical symptom for a mechanical risk. Review both sensing and clearance.
How to verify the fix
Confirm reliable detection at the worst accepted gap without contact, and document the sensor model and target assumptions.
